A News Report on Boggy Creek
Introduction
Boggy creek is a small stream running through several suburbs of Frankston, such as Seaford, Patterson Lakes and Carrum Downs. It flows from Langwarrin into Eel Race drain into Kananook Creek, and from there into Port Philip Bay. It is home to a great variety of plants and animals, some of which are endangered species. We have been visiting the reserve to look at the water quality and observe the environment.

Environment, Flora and Fauna The area around Boggy Creek is the Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve, where it is bushland only disturbed by tracks where people can walk or run through the reserve and enjoy the peace and quiet and the natural beauty of the reserve. There are many types of animals that live around Boggy Creek, such as the endangered Southern Brown Bandicoot (Isoodon obesulus), as well as more common animals like Tawny Frogmouths (Podargus strigoides) and Sugar Gliders (Petaurus breviceps). There are also many types of trees, including a few different types of sheoaks and gumtrees and the Swamp Paperbark (Melaleuca ericfolia), as well as smaller plants, such as the Bluebell Creeper (Sollya heterophylia) and Scrambling Coral-fern (Gleichenia microphylla). However, with people walking through the reserve, there ends up being rubbish lying around there. This could effect the water quality, and on top of that there are also several roads that cross over Boggy Creek, which could also affect the water quality. These things could in turn disrupt and damage the ecosystems in Boggy Creek. For example, there are pollutants from the roads and cars that could affect the water quality. This water could then be taken in by the plants, making them sick, and then any animals eating those plants could get sick too. There is also a possibility that this water could get out to Port Philip Bay and then affect the fish. Results |
This is what we found to be the ph of the water in Boggy Creek. These tests were taken in various locations. Thanks to this information, we have been able to discover that it seems that up at Kananook Creek there is the freshest water, as fresh water is at about ph 7. This also shows that the water near McCleland Drive is the most alkaline and more affected by humans. This may be because of the quarry being very near this part of the creek, while Kananook Creek is a lot further downstream. Another thing we have discovered during our visits to Boggy Creek is that there are some signs of pollution in the Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve, not including the water. I was only able to get this one photo, however I'm sure my colleagues who have been exploring and researching as well should have some more evidence.

Conclusion
So, in conclusion, I think that Boggy Creek is fairly clean and healthy, however I believe their are some things we could do to improve the water quality and make the Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve a cleaner and more natural place. Also the quarry may be affecting the water from Boggy Creek, as I have said previously, making it more alkaline and more unhealthy for the wildlife that drink it. I think though that we have had more bad impacts on the environment around Boggy Creek than we have good ones. Although there are groups of people who look after the creek, there are still people who leave rubbish in the Pines Flora and Fauna Reserve and there are many roads and a quarry that can also affect the water in the creek. In the end, I think that a way for us to protect the ecology around the creek is to try not to leave rubbish around the reserve it runs through and near the creek itself wherever it flows.
